ARTIST STATEMENT

I create pop-out, poetry books and zines inspired by my Chinese heritage, Mother Earth, and Japanese literary and paper arts traditions such as manga, haiga, haiku, tanka, suminagashi, origami and orihon. I enjoy producing specific visual and physical paper textures through orizomegami, suminagashi, marbling and other decorative paper art techniques, and how they create a sense of place and mood in my visual poetry books. I experiment with various accordion book and zine formats in which to publish “comiku” (comics+ haiku) and other micro-poetry formats that bridge the personal and collective experiences of being alive on Earth, across space and time. I enjoy facilitating public workshops on creating visual poetry through book arts.
