Congratulations to Joan Lyons and Karen Carcia, the winners of CBAA's 2020 Career Awards! Lyons and Carcia will be recognized at the Annual Members' Meeting at the biennial conference in New Orleans in January 2020.
Grounded in the understanding that photography and print developed simultaneously and in all their myriad permutations are inextricably connected, Lyons has made work in a variety of media including, and often combining, silver gelatin prints, artist’s books, archaic photographic processes, pinhole photography, offset lithography, Xerography, screenprinting, photo-quiltmaking, and computer-based work. She has published over forty editions of her artist’s books.
Lyons was Founding Director of the Visual Studies Workshop Press from 1972 to 2005, and was responsible for its development and operation and for the publication of over 450 titles. The Press, a leading publisher and printer of artists’ books, has been active in the evolution and definition of the field over the past three decades. In addition to artists’ books, the Press has designed and produced books by photographers and writers, as well as titles relating to theory and historical inquiry in the visual arts. Lyons has also taught in the M.F.A. Program in Visual Studies in affiliation with SUNY Brockport.
Karen Carcia is a poet and book artist. She fell in love with letterpress-printed books as a teenager when she bought a beautifully designed volume of poems—the words had a real, physical presence on the page that matched the way she felt reading them. Since then she’s been a student of the book. She is the author of On Subjects of Which We Know Nothing (New Michigan Press); her poems have appeared in Prompt Press, Anomalous, Diagram, and Forklift, Ohio. Her bookwork has been featured in national and international shows. She teaches at the University of Iowa Center for the Book.
