Calls for Proposals

Embracing the Tangible: Fostering Interdisciplinary Connections in Book Art

Possible paper topics include:

  • The haptic experience of artist's books: exploring the sensory dimensions of touch, texture and materiality
  • Interdisciplinary approaches to book art: bridging connections between the book form and literature, visual arts, technology, the sciences, and other disciplines
  • Traditional techniques and new technologies: examining how digital tools and processes are reshaping the artist's book
  • The influence of accessible tools and equipment via makers spaces, hybrid studios, and studio collaborations on the artist’s book
  • cultural and environmental influences on book art: considering the impact of heritage, sustainability, and global perspectives on contemporary book art practices.
  • Best practices for lab and studio management for both traditional and digital equipment

We welcome teachers, students, artists, librarians, conservators, art historians, writers, studio managers and anyone interested in the field to offer unique perspectives and pose additional questions and theories pertaining to the conference theme. We invite abstracts for individual presentations as well as detailed proposals for a pre-formed panel or roundtable on a specific topic.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
Please note that you must be a CBAA member in order to make a submission and that the only way to submit proposals is through this online submission manager. All categories are open to all CBAA members except for the student lightning round which is only open to undergraduate and graduate students.

Individual Paper Presentation proposals: Please include a proposal title at the top of the page. Proposal should take the form of a 200–250-word abstract for a 20-minute talk or artist presentation. Accepted proposals will be grouped into panels of talks with compatible themes or approaches.

Pre-formed Panel proposals: include a panel title at the top of the page. Each pre-formed panel will be assigned a moderator. You may use one of the following formats: 3 presenters each giving 20-minute talks or 4 presenters each giving 15-minute talks. The proposal should take the form of a 200–250-word overview plus individual 200–250-word abstracts from each of the participants.

Roundtable Discussion proposals: Please include a discussion title at the top of the page. The proposal should take the form of a 200–250-word description of the topic to be discussed and what demographic groups of conference goers might be interested in participating in the discussion. The submitter of the proposal will act as the moderator for the discussion and give a brief introductory presentation (5-minute) about the topic.

Student Lightning Round: category of presentation is only open to CBAA student members. Participants will each give a 5- minute presentation about their book art related work with slides Participants in the student lightning round must be enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at the time of the conference. Submissions MUST include a downloadable slide presentation with 10 slides. Slides will run automatically while the presentation is being given. The Submission deadline for the Student Lightning Round is April 1st to give students additional time to create their slide presentations. Please see the submission application for more information.

Student proposals: Students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels are encouraged to make proposals for individual presentations or pre-formed panels. In addition, student members have the option of submitting a proposal for the Student Lightning Talks (separate submission category).

SUBMISSION NOTES:

  1. Only CBAA members (individual, student, and institutional members) are eligible to make submissions.  In order to become a new member, or to renew your membership, please go to this CBAA web page: https://www.collegebookart.org/page-363225
  2. In an effort to promote original scholarship in the field of academic book art, abstracts submitted to CBAA should not be concurrently submitted for consideration to another conference.
  3. Please limit abstracts to no more than 250 words; longer abstracts will not be considered.
  4. Proposal must be submitted as either a PDF or a Word document.
  5. This is a blind jurying process; please do not include your name on any of the files. This includes in the names of the files themselves. Instead, use the title of your talk as your file name. You should enter a short bio in the cover letter/biography section of the submission form.
  6. A member may make more than one submission but only one submission will be accepted per member.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS: You will be asked to submit the following information when prompted by the online submission manager for each entry separately:

  • Member's Name
  • Member’s address
  • Member’s phone number
  • Job title, institution, city and state of institution
  • Short bio (this can include the member’s name and will be included in the printed program if accepted)
  • Title of proposal
  • 50-word synopsis (to be printed in the conference program if accepted)
  • 250-word abstract (this should not include the member’s name)

SUBMISSION DEADLINES: Abstracts MUST be received no later than December 8, 2024. Submissions received after this date will not be considered for acceptance.

January 15, 2025: Notification of acceptance or rejection of proposals

Call for Demonstration Proposals

Embracing the Tangible: Fostering Interdisciplinary Connections in Book Art

We welcome teachers, students, artists, librarians, conservators, art historians, writers, studio managers and anyone with experience in book art, printmaking or related fields to submit proposals for practical demonstrations related to the practice of book art.  Demonstration sessions are 1.5 hours. Proposals should be no longer than 250 words and include a list of materials, tools and equipment that will need to be provided by the hosting institution. Please note that proposals should be for demonstrations only and not for workshops that include audience participation. Proposals should be limited to demonstrations that can be given using tools and equipment on the following list:
